Shechem

Shechem is a man living at the time of the Patriarchs. He is named in 11 verses of the Bible, first in Genesis 33:19.

  And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for an hundred pieces of money.And the plot of ground where he pitched his tent, he purchased from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver.

  And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the region, saw her, he took her and lay with her by force.

  And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.So Shechem told his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as a wife.”

  And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.Meanwhile, Shechem’s father Hamor came to speak with Jacob.

  And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:But because Shechem had defiled their sister Dinah, Jacob’s sons answered him and his father Hamor deceitfully.

  And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor’s son.Their offer seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem.

  And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city and addressed the men of their city:

  And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.All the men who went out of the city gate listened to Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male of the city was circumcised.

  And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went out.They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with their swords, took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went away.
